Recently, the SAMA Al Khutaim Heritage Home opened in the small shepherd village of Al Khutaim on the plateau of Jebel Shams. The eco-lodge is located right at the edge of the approximately 1,000-meter-deep Wadi Nakhar Gorge, which is also known as the Grand Canyon of Oman.

Right outside the door of the SAMA Al Khutaim Heritage Home is the entrance to the globally famous Balcony Walk (W6), which runs along the cliff face high above the breathtaking canyon, leading to a ghost village called As Sab, and is considered the most beautiful hiking route in Oman.

When booking this exclusive accommodation, you should be quick, as there are only two beautifully decorated rooms, each offering a unique view of the natural wonders of the Sultanate through large panoramic windows.

The SAMA Al Khutaim Heritage Home is housed in a traditional building, restored with great care for the cultural heritage using natural materials and complemented with modern elements.

We especially love the cute goats from the neighboring shepherd, nibbling on the bushes around the accommodation, making the panorama before you even more incredible.

Breakfast and dinner are served on a panoramic terrace and are of excellent quality with good vegetarian options. In the evening, you have a magical view of the lights of Al Hamra deep down in the valley from here.

Room categories: Double room

Sustainability criteria:

Support for the local community

Top features:

  • Perfectly located for exploring Snake Canyon
  • Great starting point for hikes
  • Friendly and helpful host
  • Authentically decorated rooms

Getting to the Bait Bimah Travel Lodge is an adventure in itself. The eco-friendly guesthouse is located right in the middle of Wadi Bani Awf (pronounced Wadi Bani Auf), which is traversed by a winding, unpaved sand and gravel road. A four-wheel drive is absolutely necessary to reach this beautiful place.

The relatively simple rooms of the Bait Bimah Travel Lodge are clean and decorated with Omani weavings. The food at the lodge is simple but very delicious, and the host is extremely friendly and helpful.

However, the real highlight is the tours that can be started from the Bait Bimah Travel Lodge.

If you are a fan of canyoning, you should definitely explore the famous Snake Canyon. Don’t worry, it’s not named after dangerous snakes but because it winds like a snake through high cliffs with narrow paths and natural pools. Since flash floods can occur during rain, we strongly recommend taking a professional guide recommended by the hotel, who can read the weather and is familiar with the safest routes through the gorge.

For mountain bikers and hikers, breathtaking tours through the Wadi start from the Bait Bimah Travel Lodge. For example, you can head to Salma or Bald Sayt, a mountain village with traditional houses, winding alleys, terraced fields, and palm groves.

The Al Misfah Hospitality Inn is located in the village of Misfat Al Abriyeen, which is built in terraces in the rock. It was one of the first heritage hotels in the entire Sultanate of Oman. The multi-story building has been faithfully renovated and revitalized. This allows you to experience the authentic, unspoiled Oman of past days up close, for one or more nights.

The rustic character of the rooms is characterized by wooden beam ceilings, mud walls with niches, and decorations with Omani artifacts, such as sabers and wooden trunks.

The excellent breakfast and dinner are served on a spacious panoramic terrace on the roof of the Al Misfah Hospitality Inn. Here, you can enjoy an invaluable view over the rooftops of the old mountain village, the lush oasis landscape of the Wadi below, and the barren mountains in the background.

After breakfast, the host invites you to a free tour through the narrow streets of Misfat Al Abriyeen, the palm gardens with their irrigation channels (called Afladsch), and a family museum where you can learn a lot about the original life in Misfat.

The typical Omani dinner and breakfast are freshly prepared from local organic ingredients, making the stay a true delight.

Flop

The breakfast and dinner at Basmat Al Misfah are particularly noteworthy. The meals are made from organic food, some of which is grown or produced by the host himself. For example, the figs, lemons, and papayas come from his own farm, and the honey is also produced by the host, who is a beekeeper on the side. If interested, he is happy to give you a tour of his fruit plantation or the beehives.

Additionally, Basmat Al Misfah offers guided hikes and tours, such as through the Wadi Misfat Al Abriyeen with the refreshing option to bathe in natural spring water pools.
